Day 1 - 24 May 2016

First Day (24 May, Tuesday)
  • What did you do today?
    • We had a briefing on material science, and then went on to do 2 of our 3 projects - Scanning Electron Microscope and Tensile Strength Testing
  • What did you learn today?
    • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
      • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) uses electrons instead of light to interact with the atoms of the specimen and give off signals. These signals are being received and an image is produced.
      • SEM's are better than light microscopes in these aspects (this list is non-exhaustive):
        • Resolution of Image
        • Magnification of Image
    • Tensile Strength Testing
      • Tensile strength testing is the method of testing the maximum load of the object before it fractures or breaks.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere

What sounds interesting about this project?

  • Material Science involves chemistry and physics, which are my 2 better fields of sciences compared to biology
  • I am interested in seeing a scanning electron microscope and what tensile testing is. Doing some prior research, I have seen that material testing involves using a machine with 2 clamps and the material is being twisted.

What do you think you can learn from this project?

  • I can learn about atomic structures and polymer properties, and know how material properties are being affected by these factors on the atomic level.
